LED Lighting: cost, savings and EPC impact
LED lighting is a small upgrade with quick payback. It is a good first step because it costs little and counts towards the lighting part of an EPC.
IndicativeFigures on this page are indicative ranges for a typical UK home. They are not a quote, a survey or an EPC. Your home will differ.
What it is
Halogen and older bulbs are swapped for LED equivalents. Fixed fittings that take LEDs are best for the EPC, and the assessor counts the share of fixed lighting that is low-energy.
Choose warm-white bulbs for living spaces and check that dimmers and fittings are compatible.
Indicative cost, savings and EPC effect
| Typical cost | £50 to £300 |
|---|---|
| EPC points (SAP) | +0 to +2 |
| Bill saving | £20 to £60 a year |
Low cost. Counts towards your EPC lighting score.
Prices vary a lot by home. See the Energy Saving Trust’s retrofit guide for general background.
LED lighting can add up to a couple of EPC points where lighting is currently inefficient. See how EPC ratings work. Savings from several upgrades do not simply add up.
Is it right for your home?
- Homes that still have halogen downlights, filament bulbs or old energy-saving bulbs.
- Any home, since the cost is low. It is not worth paying a firm for what you can do with a few bulbs.
What affects the price
- Number of fittings
- Bulb quality
- Whether fittings or just bulbs are changed
Questions to ask any installer
- Are the bulbs compatible with my dimmers and fittings?
- If fittings are being replaced, what is the lifetime and warranty?
Always get a proper survey and written quote. We introduce you to one vetted firm to do that, and explain why only one.
